Warning about the dangers of exposure to ultraviolet radiation !

Author: Institutul Național Francez al Cancerului. Prof.dr. René-Jean Bensadoun ( Faculté de Médecine de Nice Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France)

The French National Cancer Institute (CNS) warns of the dangers of exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation and provides a reminder of effective protective measures. "The sun exerts an irresistible attraction on us, young and old alike, often mistakenly perceived as harmless; tanning can even be considered a symbol of good health. However, UV rays are harmful and promote skin cancer. Faced with the constant increase in skin cancer, we call for everyone to become more aware and adopt extremely simple protective behaviors." » Professor Norbert Ifrah, President of the French National Cancer Institute

➡️ 100,000 new cases of skin cancer each year,

➡️ 17,922 new cases of melanoma per year by 2023,

➡️ Melanoma incidence multiplied by 5 between 1990 and 2023,

➡️ 80% of these cancers are linked to excessive UV exposure, often starting in childhood.

❌ Many misconceptions persist: - No, sunscreen alone is not enough because it does not filter 100% of UV rays; - No, tanning, even gradual or artificial, is not protective; - Yes, the use of artificial UV rays, even occasional use, increases the risk of skin cancer.

✅ Good prevention practices: • Seek shade, • Avoid sun exposure during the most intense hours (10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in overseas territories and 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. in mainland France), • If exposed, wear protective clothing, headgear, and suitable sunglasses, • In addition, apply SPF 50 sunscreen against UVA and UVB rays to exposed areas. The challenge is clear: raise awareness of the risks and ingrain good habits in children‘s lives, especially now that we know that childhood sunburns lead to skin cancer in adults.
